Mike Thomson & Christy Lefteri: Books and Bees - Hope and Survival in War-Torn Syria

Christy Lefteri, bestselling author of The Beekeeper of Aleppo, and BBC World Affairs correspondent, Mike Thomson, discuss the triumph of the human spirit in the most devastating of circumstances. Lefteri, the child of Cypriot refugees, drew on her own experience as a volunteer at a refugee centre in Athens to write her debut novel, that follows beekeeper, Nuri, and his wife, Afra, as they flee bombed-out Aleppo for an uncertain future in Britain. In Syria's Secret Library, Thomson tells the extraordinary true story of how the people of a besieged Syrian town found hope and inspiration in a secret underground library, risking their lives to save books from destruction and bring hope to a fractured society.
